Treatment of the of the students from EU/EFTA nationals in Poland

When are you entitled to treatment in Poland?

You are entitled to treatment in Poland, if you are insured in one of the EU or EFTA states and your stay in Poland is related to study (also tourist trip, family visit).

What documents do you need?

The type of document you need to hold depends on the purpose of your visit to Poland, if your stay is temporary, e.g. for study is European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

When you stay in Poland temporarily and forgot about taking your EHIC, you may present a provisional replacement certificate of the EHIC to the healthcare physician. Your insurer will send the EHIC on your request.

What kind of treatment can you receive with EHIC?

The scope of treatment accessible with EHIC is limited. You are entitled only to treatment:

  • which is necessary and unscheduled,
  • within the public healthcare system,
  • performed on the same conditions as for the Polish nationals.

You must present the EHIC during each visit to a healthcare facility. The decision on the necessary services to be provided is made by the attending physician. He/she will consider your health condition and length of the planned stay.

The provisional replacement certificate of the EHIC entitles you to the same scope of services.

How to receive treatment in Primary healthcare (PHC)?

Primary healthcare (PHC) includes the outpatient care (i.e. in the consulting room, outpatient clinic or surgeries) provided by a primary healthcare physician, nurse or midwife.

As the person insured abroad, you may not submit the statement on entitlement to treatment. You must always present the document confirming your entitlement to treatment or be positively verified electronically by the physician.

Treatment of the students from non EU/EEEA countries in Poland

Students from non EU/EEA countries are advised to purchase health insurance in Poland immediately after their arrival (it is suggested that travel insurance should cover the travel and initial stay):
